This is the best television series I have ever seen. The creators were brave in creating this very complex story that looked fearlessly at the evil often driven by corporate greed which often go unchecked by complicate governments, especially in underdeveloped countries.

However, the story is never preachy. The artistry of the story telling, the complexity of characters' actions and motivations, often surprising, even to themselves kept them from becoming plot serving stereotypes as in so many television series.

Hell, the show was like a great novel--dare I say as good as Faulkner's SOUND AND THE FURY or Absalom, Absalom!

I've watched it several times and will watch it again just as I reread novels I love.

I was unreservedly impressed with this show from beginning to end. None of it seemed weak or less than superb to me, because it struck me as a whole, not several episodes, and each part of it contributed to the rest of it. I've come to expect great things of "entertainment" from Canada, especially if there are multi-national contributorscollaborators involved, as is often the case. This show lived up to my expectations, and even exceeded in some ways. I could go on for an entire article myself on the various aspects of the mechanics of the show alone, let alone the richly complex storyline. I'll try to highlight a couple of most striking points:

The acting seemed flat at first, but only certain characters and circumstances. In other scenes, the acting was brilliantly intense, complex and believable. I came to feel that the acting was deliberately understated, rather than flat, in certain scenes, and the effect was to point up things which would otherwise have been obscure, though important to the storyline, or would have had to have been over-explained to accomplish the same level of viewer comprehension. To me, this technique was ingenius.

Another clarifying ingenius technique was the subtle subtitling of each 'verse with the format of each being markedly different, so it was possible for the viewer to understand which 'verse was being viewed without interfering with the flow of the storyline and without dizzying or overwhelming the viewer with the confusion of switching around all the time. A great deal of clarification was accomplished almost subliminally this way.

The characters developed as real people do, complex, not one-dimensional, evolving rather than static, no one perfectly good or perfectly evil, with choices to be made from any number of commonly experienced motives. This is one of my favorite qualities of Canadian "entertainment".

While I wouldn't mind seeing this done again, further, I'm also quite all right with this being where it stops. Canadian productions tend to view like great novels read, and I'm always ok with the feeling that the story continues somewhere without my voyeurism. Wrapping up the storyline before the second season made it possible to accommodate a potential lack of network and/or public support, while leaving certain things open-ended allowed for the possibility, without the necessity, of continuing the story if it was well-received. I think it was skillfully done, and a huge number of American productions should take lessons from their Canadian counterparts.

The character development is another article, and the storyline at least two more. All around, this was deeply satisfying "entertainment"...well beyond my concept of "entertainment", in that it did far more than entertain. Thought-provoking, belief-challenging, eye-opening and inspirational, Charlie Jade is too complex and intelligent to be categorized by that pale designation.

an excellent, entertaining series. the ending left room for speculation and mystery, yet was complete enough to satisfy as a finale. it was refreshing to watch, and i appreciated not being told what everything was supposed to mean and what to to feel about the issues involved. thank you, and i hope there are more projects like this to come!

I just finished watching this series a few days ago , and thought this was excellent sci-fi. After watching each episode I always wanted to watch the next one right away to see what happens next. Very engrossing story, and all I can keep thinking now is :'Is there ever going to be a Season 2?' I surely hope so. I know it's been a few years now , but i find it curious that on IMDB it shows the date "2005 -" for Charlie Jade , and that's it. A bit of hope that one day there might actually be more :)

I'm another late comer to this series, [ discovered via NetFlix /2012]. Addicted from the first episode, I loved every minute of it. Similar to the above post, I watched the entire series over three nights. I was so disappointed that there was no second season. I hope at some time, in some 'verse', it returns.

Kudos to you for such fine work.

Here it is the end of 2011 and my heart still searches for news of Charlie Jade. Do the writers not realize that they can make money selling the books? A series of books instead of a series on TV would satisfy me just fine.
My wish for 2012 is that the writers would get their imagination caps back on and got on a writing frenzy about Charlie Jade.

I really enjoyed this series and plan to acquire the Region 1 DVD if I can. One fun item to take note of in episode 18 is the trivia that Alphaverse apparently uses digital time. I won't say how this is evident but will instead leave this Easter Egg as something to discover.

A 62 yr old majorly dedicated scifi fan like myself missed this exquisitely written, acted and produced saga first time around? I just spent two days straight watching the entire thing and plan to start at the beginning again in about a week... I need time to absorb and reflect on the layers and detail.

This opus could have easily been plumbed for a second season, though I can understand how its density and intricacies could burden the less attentive mind. For me it was an incredibly satisfying meal. Major kudos to everyone involved in the production.

I agree you can't care about something pulling it out of thin air! loved the concept and the overall but it was like someone was trying to pull 20 episodes out of what should have been only 13 or so. Stretching a 30 show into 2 hours. To much filler that should have been montaged out instead of the elaborate shots and editing. Also there should not have been so many of the haze and daze shots like Reena blurring around when she was with the paramedic and it went no where Charlie had several of the same type episodes where it was to much played into it and should have been cut or shorter or at least had some kind of meaning instead of just "Oh I'm dazed and confused and disoriented and upset and stumbling and don't know where this is going and blah blah see how it is when you drag meaningless crap around. The episode where Jasmine on Alfa and they were threatening her living there since charlie was dead and then coming to take her stuff and then the old Pimp guy that was drug to far then the little ball that came from the lawyers why was that scene so much to it why did it have to be elaborate there was nothing to it "Hey Jasmine if you are seeing this I'm most likely dead you gotta pick yourself up and make yourself a better class person you can do it see ya around." "Click" WTF no nothing. If it meant that little why 2 mins worth of show why not a quick Narrative letter by Charlie saying that and onto something new and more meaning. We knew Charlie was upset from the get go and seen it in how he acted why did we need to see it in a 10-30 zoom in zoom out rotate the camera to make people dizzy shots there were scenes like that several times in the 1st 3 episodes. All stretching filler. Thats why I got board watching it. Don't get me wrong I am loving the show but if it were not for the fact that I am watching it online and can get to some kind of point real fast getting to the next episode I wouldn't be watching it because it is lacking in action its all about the psycho drama which is drug out just like this post even though its a year and 2 months since the last post the shows over and no one will probably see this but just like me if someone else watches it and sees mine in a year they can talk to themselves as well.

Great show, little hard to wrap your head around but great concept. I live in Australia and had never heard of Charlie Jade but when surfing the net some guy put in his top 10 sci fi's, so I downloaded and watched the whole season & I asked my local DVD store to get it in for me. I really hope there gets to be another season. If it finally gets played over here I gaurantee I'll watch it to help the ratings, why don't they count P2P dowloads of TV shows in ther ratings, hell I wouldn't care if an add popped up during the show every now and then just so they could pay to upload 1080p Sci Fi shows, advertising should pay for everything ie, instead of ring ring when you call someone lets hear the local pizza specials and get the call for free - its only a matter of time before Google does it

Listening to this podcast made me sad.

Ok, there were a few interesting points that we got some insight in to... but having seen the show a couple of times and accepted that somethings worked and somethings didn't... I now know why some of it didn't work, there was no real underlying stucture to the storyline... as Robert said, sooooo many times.. he was making it up as he went along, ...not only does this show that there was no overriding understanding to the story on the writer's side but that because this was the case, there couldn't have been very much honest caring about the show on their end.. because how can you care about something that you are just pulling out of thin air, with no proper time to think about what you are writing/making.

The main thing I came away with from the 'cast was that for most of the time, he was throwing crap together... it takes the shine away from my outlook over the show.

For some reason, I have never been able to get the "download" option to work for the podcasts. When I click on it, it simply open a new tab in Firefox with a playback screen and begins the audio playback.

Any suggestions?

I'd really like to download these podcasts as a file to my mp3 player and listen to them during my jog. Is this possible?

Thanks!

> Each of the intros suggested we buy the dvd’s from amazonuk.com; however,
> when I checked, the seller indicated that the dvd’s would not play on regular
> players in the US. Is there a player sold in the US which will play these

The DVDs that are available from Amazon.co.uk are region 2 PAL formatted so you'll need to have either a multi-region DVD player or one that plays region 2 PAL discs. Those can be purchased at Amazon.com and many other retailers. It's also possible to play those discs on your computer as well. If you'd like more details I highly recommend posting a message on the Charlie Jade podcast discussion forum where many other Charlie Jade fans, including us, can offer advice. Those forums are located here...

Charlie Jade was, the best sci-fi series I've seen in, probably the last 10 years since Babylon 5!

Its a sad statement about how tv channels work that it took me until 5 years or so after it was made and originally released to even hear about. OK Yes there are some frankly terrible episodes in there (particularly early on) but overall this I was in awe at this series.

And yes I'd love to see/read/hear more from the Charlie Jade universe(s).

I think I read somewhere that the scripts or stories for the second series were written... if thats the case I wonder if they could be leaked somehow!

Problem is, watching their music video, I still see the Charlie Jade images... I hope the band doesn't mind too much :)

No, no extra commercials .. what I recorded was X-Files. I remember thinking "Gee I wonder why I have so much X-Files? I hope the tape ran long enough to catch the end of CJ."

So, somehow, the SciFi Channel ran X-Files longer than 'normal' to take up the time normally used by the CJ intro.

At the end of X-Files the norm is to go straight into the CJ opening, but instead we went to the commercials that would normally follow the CJ opening.

At the time I didn't think anything about it .. but only after I started to edit out the commercials did I realize something was wrong.

Did you record extra commercials in that 5 minute gap?

SciFi Channel had to have specifically changed the schedule, because in my DVR to-do list, that episode was listed as starting as 12:05am instead of 12:00am, like all the other episodes did.

I thought it was an adjustment of some sort, because I didn't notice the shift of the start time until after the recording had begun... but if it was intentional to avoid the airing of that 5 minutes altogether, that certainly is an odd choice for what's a "late night" airing now.

I hope the US DVD release makes up for it... and I hope that SciFi Channel's burying of its airing doesn't kill the chances of us getting a US DVD release at all.

I thought it was an adjustment of some sort, because I didn’t notice the shift of the start time until after the recording had begun… but if it was intentional to avoid the airing of that 5 minutes altogether, that certainly is an odd choice for what’s a “late night” airing now.

I hope the US DVD release makes up for it… and I hope that SciFi Channel’s burying of its airing doesn’t kill the chances of us getting a US DVD release at all.

Hmmm ... I wonder ... I've never seen any other "feed" of CJ, only the version show on the SciFi Channel.

I can't help but notice that the version we see here is edited. Words are bleeped, and nudity is blurred.

Not that all this is *necessary* at 3am .. but maybe it was done with the expectation that it would be shown in prime time.

Anyway .. the intro to this (#15) episode we see a recap of the begining of episode #12 .. THE EPISODE THAT THE SCIFI CHANNEL did not show the intro (see my comment, and Summer's reply, on that episode) It was pretty violent.

Maybe, just maybe, the SciFi Channel intentionally did not show us this part of #12 because of the violence .. maybe they thought it was beyond editing so they just didn't show us the intro .. but started with the commercials after the titles.

Summer said that her DVR started "late" .. so this was *not* an emergeency that just happened that night .. it was something that was planned (not showing that part of the show) .. and the SciFi Channel let the DVR folks know the 'real' start of the (edited) show.

I record the show on (old fashoned) VHS and program extra time before and after, so I know the intro was not shown at all (unlike Summer, who wasn't sure)

Oh well .. I've got my fingers crossed for the USA DVD.

ARRRRGH!!! That &%@&##@@#!# Sci-Fi Channel!

I record the show on a VCR (yes, the old fashoned way) and I have a few minutes "extra" on both ends of the recording.

It seemed, when I watched the show, that the X Files seemed to run a bit longer. I was worried that I may not have recorded all the way to the end of Charlie Jade. But I *did* get the end on tape.

THEN, I started editing out the commercials .. and I realized WHY I got to the end ... the Sci Fi Channel did NOT show the first segment of CJ!! The opening and the title segments were CUT!! We started with the commercials after the title .. we usually start with the opening right after X Files.

It's bad enough that they screw with us by putting CJ on a 3am .. then they have to cut it too??
